0ur Unfortunate Khilji

Not all stories have a happy ending and so it was for our unfortunate Khilji. 

Khilji was the pack leader – stubborn, agile, cunning, and dangerous and hence was the fond naming. 

One day he was involved in a brawl that left him with multiple dog-bite injuries on his face, ears as well as other parts of his body.  It took 12 days to heal him medically.  Although we were happy about his recovery, we realized that he was growing older with the sense of sight and hearing diminishing gradually. 

Just when he was doing better after the injuries, that fateful dawn failed to beckon his morning. 

Khilji was crushed, crushed to death by the nearby departmental store milk truck. That stubborn dog who never gave up had to give up finally. The pack became leaderless. 

We fought against the recklessness and urged the driver to compensate monetarily so that never again he neglects a community animal like this. 

With heavy hearts, we cremated Khilji.  He will forever remain in our memories, and we still fondly remember him.
